The vibe
Cheras is one of the Klang Valley's biggest residential areas, running south-east from the city towards Kajang. It's lived-in and local, with morning markets, busy food courts and night markets, and a mix of older terrace houses and newer condos. It's especially popular with families.
Who it suits
- Commuters into the city who can live near an MRT station.
- Families who want a terrace house or a bigger condo for the budget.
- First-time renters looking for value.

Getting around
Public transport
The MRT Kajang Line runs through Cheras, with stations including Taman Midah, Taman Mutiara, Taman Connaught, Taman Suntex, Sri Raya, Bandar Tun Hussein Onn and Batu 11 Cheras, continuing to Kajang. It connects directly to Bukit Bintang and the city centre. Parts of Cheras nearer the city are also close to LRT stations.
Driving and traffic
Cheras is served by Jalan Cheras, the Cheras–Kajang Expressway, the MRR2 and newer highways such as SUKE. They're convenient off-peak but can be very slow at rush hour, so living within walking distance of the MRT makes a big difference.
Schools and universities
Cheras has a large choice of national and Chinese national-type schools, plus private schools and tuition centres. Tell me which schools you're considering and I'll focus the search around them.
Shopping, food and daily life
- Sunway Velocity and MyTown: big malls on the city side.
- IKEA Cheras: handy for furnishing your new home.
- EkoCheras and Cheras LeisureMall: everyday shopping.
- Taman Connaught: famous for its long night market and local food.
Pros and cons
What's good
- Good value for space
- MRT access along the corridor
- Excellent local food
- Choice of condos and landed homes
What to weigh up
- Heavy peak-hour traffic
- Quality varies a lot between areas
- Some older flats have no lifts
- Further out means a longer commute
My tips for renting here
- Pick by station first. Being a 5-minute walk from the MRT matters more than the postcode.
- Check flooding history for low-lying streets, and look at the drains.
- For terrace houses, check security and whether the street is in a guarded scheme.
- Visit at night to check parking and noise near busy food areas.
